What Is the Hazmat (H) Endorsement?

The Hazmat (H) endorsement is added to your commercial driver’s license and authorizes you to transport hazardous materials in quantities that require the vehicle to be placarded. It’s one of the highest-demand, highest-paying endorsements in trucking — hazmat loads pay a premium.

Since February 7, 2022, anyone getting the Hazmat endorsement for the first time must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, following the curriculum in 49 CFR Part 380, Appendix E. The requirement is tied to the endorsement itself — not the class of CDL you hold. That’s exactly what this course covers, online, for $20.

ELDT Hazmat Endorsement — FAQ

What is the ELDT Hazmat endorsement course?

The ELDT Hazmat endorsement course is the FMCSA-required Entry-Level Driver Training you must complete before taking your state Hazmat (H) endorsement knowledge test. It follows the 13-unit curriculum in 49 CFR Part 380, Appendix E. ELDT HQ offers it 100% online for $20.

How much does the Hazmat endorsement course cost?

ELDT HQ’s Hazmat endorsement course is $20 — a one-time payment with no subscription. Other providers commonly charge $49 to $99 for the same required training.

Can I do the Hazmat endorsement online?

Yes. The Hazmat endorsement requires classroom training only, and the FMCSA allows it to be completed entirely online. ELDT HQ’s course is 100% online and self-paced — most students finish in a single day.

Is there a driving test for the Hazmat endorsement?

No. Unlike Class A and Class B, the Hazmat (H) endorsement requires classroom training only — there is no behind-the-wheel component. You complete the course, then take a state-administered knowledge test.

How long does the Hazmat endorsement course take?

There is no federal minimum number of hours — you must cover all 13 units and pass the assessment. Because ELDT HQ’s course is self-paced and online, most students complete it in a single day.

What score do I need to pass?

The FMCSA requires an overall score of at least 80% on the written or electronic assessment to complete your ELDT Hazmat endorsement course.

Do I need a TSA background check for Hazmat?

Yes. In addition to the ELDT course and the state knowledge test, the TSA runs a Security Threat Assessment (background check) before the Hazmat endorsement is issued. TSA processing can take several weeks, so it’s best to start early.

What does the Hazmat endorsement course cover?

The Appendix E curriculum covers hazard classes and identification, marking/labeling/placarding, shipping papers, loading/unloading and segregation, emergency response information, and security awareness — 13 units in total.

Do I need a specific class of CDL for Hazmat?

The Hazmat requirement is tied to the endorsement itself, not the class of CDL. You can add the H endorsement to a Class A, Class B, or Class C CDL as long as you complete the required ELDT course and testing.

When do I NOT need the Hazmat endorsement course?

ELDT is not retroactive. If you held a valid Hazmat endorsement before February 7, 2022 and keep it current, you don’t need to complete the training. If you let it lapse and reapply, you’re treated as a first-time applicant.

Does completing this make me eligible for the state test?

Once you complete the course and pass the assessment, your completion is reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Your state uses that record to confirm you’re eligible to take the Hazmat knowledge test.

Do I get a certificate?

Yes. When you complete the course and pass the assessment, you receive your ELDT completion certificate — your proof of training and your next step toward your Hazmat endorsement.
